Hurricane Irene: CHFCo. Handles Multiple Calls for Service
Monday, November 6, 2017
On August 27th, 2011 the Cranston Heights Fire Company began staffing crews for the impending hurricane. Cranston Heights had approximately 30 personnel, on seven pieces of apparatus, ready to respond throughout the storm. Crews began at 10:00 AM and were in service until approximately 1:00 PM on August 28th. All was quiet until approximately 10:00 PM when the first emergency came in. Between the seven available crews, they responded to approximately sixteen fire responses and three EMS responses during their standby. Crews continued to respond throughout the height of the storm to calls for assistance. These calls included electrical hazards, water rescues, flooded basements, houses struck by trees, medical assists, motor vehicle collisions, and fire alarms. Multiple residences were evacuated, and occupants were invited to temporarily shelter within the station.
Although the storms were finished quickly, the need for assistance from the Fire Department was not. Cranston Heights continued to respond to calls for assistance throughout the days following the hurricane. We would like to thank all the volunteers who responded, both during the storm and after it.
