Early in the morning of April 16th, Squad 14 was dispatched to assist Mill Creek Fire Company on an extinguished structure fire on the 1100 block of Elderon Drive in the Arundel section of Pike Creek.
Mill Creek was handling another assignment in their area and was delayed, so Squad 14 arrived first laying in and finding a small fire on the back of the residence from the porch into the side of the home. Chief Sokira was on scene immediately behind them assisting with the operations. The crew stretched an 1-3/4 inch hose line to extinguish the fire. The crews from Squad 14, Mill Creek, Five Points Fire Company, and Hockessin Fire Company worked together to check for possible extension of the fire into the residence.
Crews from the Belvedere Fire Company and Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company were also on scene, with Ladder 9 being added supplementing the apparatus on the response. The Delaware State Fire Marshals were requested to investigate the fire. Squad 14 was in service about an hour on scene before being released by the Mill Creek command.
The fire was reported to possibly have been started in the area of where ashes from a chimney that were in a bucket placed nearby. Please remember to use proper containers to remove ashes from your fire place, and be sure to place it outside away from the home or near anything that could catch fire. Ashes even from a day or more can still hold heat and begin burning again if not fully extinguished.
